Court jails 78-year-old guard for stealing cash, bike, and cigarettes in Jos

A 78-year-old guard, Sani Ibrahim, has been sentenced to nine months in prison by a Magistrates’ Court in Jos for stealing cash, a motorbike, and packs of cigarettes from his employer.

The magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos, delivered the verdict on Thursday after Ibrahim pleaded guilty to the charge of theft.

The convict was given the option of paying a fine of N20,000 or serving the jail term.

The court also ordered Ibrahim to pay N400,000 as compensation to the complainant, Douglas Kokelu, or face another six months in prison if he failed to do so.

According to Bokkos, the sentence was meant to serve as a deterrent to others who might want to engage in such criminal acts.

The prosecution counsel, Inspector Labaran Ahmed, had earlier told the court that Kokelu reported the case on Nov. 24 at the A Division Police Station Jos.

Ahmed said that Ibrahim abandoned his duty post without permission and left the gate open for his accomplice to steal the items belonging to Kokelu.

The prosecutor said that the stolen items were valued at N694,000.

He said that the offence contravened the Plateau State Penal Code Law.
