Tribunal to Decide Fate of Lagos Governorship Election on Monday

The outcome of the 2023 Lagos State governorship election will be determined on Monday, September 25, as the Election Petition Tribunal is set to deliver its judgment on the petitions filed by two opposition candidates.

The tribunal had heard the arguments and evidence of the petitioners and respondents in the past months and reserved its ruling for a later date.

The Labour Party candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, announced on Saturday via a post on X that he had received a notification from the tribunal about the judgment date.

He wrote, “We have just been informed that judgement on our election petition at the tribunal will be delivered on Monday, the 25th of September.”

Rhodes-Vivour is challenging the re-election of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), alleging electoral malpractices, irregularities, and non-compliance with the Electoral Act and the Constitution.

He is seeking to nullify Sanwo-Olu’s victory and declare himself as the duly elected governor of Lagos State.

Another petitioner is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Abdul-Azeez Adediran, who also filed a similar petition against Sanwo-Olu and his party.

Adediran claimed that he scored the highest number of lawful votes cast in the election and that Sanwo-Olu was not qualified to contest the election.

Sanwo-Olu and the APC have denied the allegations and urged the tribunal to dismiss the petitions for lacking merit.

They maintained that Sanwo-Olu was validly elected and that the election was free, fair, and credible.

The tribunal, headed by Justice Tijani Abubakar, will decide on Monday whether to uphold or nullify Sanwo-Olu’s re-election and whether to declare any of the petitioners as the winner of the election.

The judgment will have significant implications for the political landscape of Lagos State, which is Nigeria’s commercial hub and most populous state.
