Tinubu Approves Compressed Natural Gas Initiative to Cushion Fuel Subsidy Removal

President Bola Tinubu has given his approval for the establishment of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), a landmark programme that aims to ease the economic hardship caused by the removal of fuel subsidy.

The initiative will also reduce carbon emissions and promote energy security by utilizing domestic natural gas resources.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, announced this in a statement on Friday. He said the initiative is in line with the President’s commitment to easing the impact of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians by reducing energy costs.

According to Ngelale, the initiative will revolutionize the country’s transportation landscape, with over 11,500 new CNG-enabled vehicles and 55,000 CNG conversion kits for existing PMS-dependent vehicles targeted. He said this will also boost in-country manufacturing, local assembly, and extensive job creation in accordance with the presidential directive.

The statement said the PCNGI will launch a comprehensive Adoption Strategy that will include empowering workshops, local assemblies, and job creation as key points of emphasis.

The initiative will focus on mass transit systems and student hubs in order to significantly reduce transit costs for the general populace in the immediate term.

The statement said the initiative will also facilitate the provision of workshops across all geopolitical zones and states with essential kits and comprehensive training for newly employed staff, thus creating new opportunities for technical skill development and employment for Nigerians.

The statement added that the PCNGI aims to develop stakeholder-operated Intrastate Mass Transit systems using CNG, support states in onboarding new buses, deploy CNG buses through existing operators, incentivize investors, and provide incentives for investment and partnership. It also supports training and technology transfer for sustainable jobs.

Ngelale also said that President Tinubu’s focus on assembling CNG-enabled vehicles within the country will stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities, and bolster the nation’s automotive manufacturing capabilities.

He said the initiative demonstrates the administration’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy security through domestic natural gas resource utilization.
