Wike’s Loyalists Insist On Ayu’s Resignation As PDP Chairman Rejects Private Meeting With Rivers Gov

The PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu rejected fresh moves by members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party to reconcile him and Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike and his loyalists have insisted that the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyorchia Ayu must vacate his seat for a southerner.

Newsflash Nigeria understands that Governor Wike’s loyalists have maintained that PDP Chairman must resign as a condition for peace and to back the presidential ambition of Atiku Abubakar.

Recall that Atiku’s team led by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State had on Friday met with Wike’s men led by former Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko to iron out differences between both camps.

It was however gathered that those in the Rivers State Governor’s camp insisted that Ayu must resign as a condition precedent for further discussion.

According to This Day, members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) have advised Senator Ayu to hold a private audience with Wike so they can resolve the dispute on a one-on-one basis but the former Senate President rejected the proposal.

The NWC had in their last Thursday meeting proposed to accompany Ayu to Port Harcourt if he was not willing to have a private meeting with Wike alone.

Speaking to the publication, one of the NWC members express fears that the crisis is becoming personal, asking the national chairman to take the path of a leader to see Wike and resolve the crisis which is becoming intractable.

The source stated that Ayu ruled out any private meeting with Wike on the matter, insisting that he has four years to complete his tenure as the party’s national chairman.

It was also gathered that Wike’s camp is trying to ensure that all the supporters of the Rivers State governor are carried along when the election campaign starts.

A source said: “We are waiting for a green light from the reconciliatory camps to enable the party to summon the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to approve membership of the presidential campaign council of the party.”
