Airtel Nigeria Joins 5G Race, Launches Service in Four States

Airtel Nigeria has become the fourth operator to launch its Fifth-Generation (5G) network service in Nigeria, following MTN Nigeria, Mafab Communications and Globacom. The company announced the launch of its 5G service yesterday in four states: Lagos, Ogun, Abuja and Rivers.

5G technology is the latest generation of mobile network technology that offers superfast data speeds, low latency, high reliability and enhanced connectivity for a wide range of devices and applications. 5G technology can enable innovations such as cloud computing, telemedicine, self-driving cars, cloud gaming, augmented reality, virtual reality, Internet of Things (IoT), smart homes and more.

The Chief Commercial Officer of Airtel Nigeria, Femi Oshinlaja, said that the 5G service would initially be available in selected locations within the four states and would be expanded to other cities across the country over time. He also said that customers would not need to upgrade their SIM cards to use 5G, as long as they had compatible devices and were in the right locations.

Oshinlaja reiterated the company’s commitment to deepen its investment in Nigeria and provide quality services to its customers. He said that Airtel had invested $316.7 million in January to acquire 100 MHz of spectrum in the 3500MHz band for the deployment of 5G network and 2x5MHz of 2600MHz to boost its fourth-generation coverage in the country.

The CEO of Airtel Africa Limited, Segun Ogunsanya, who was also present at the launch event, said that the acquisition of 5G spectrum by Airtel would enable the company to offer higher speed connectivity and enhance customer service and digitalisation for consumers, enterprises and the public sector.

He said: “The deployment of 5G will accelerate the availability and efficiency of fixed wireless access products across the country, contributing toward Airtel Nigeria’s progress in meeting the National Broadband Plan targets.”

Airtel Nigeria’s launch of 5G network marks a significant milestone in the development of telecommunications in Nigeria. It will bring improved connectivity and user experiences to customers in the selected states and propel Nigeria’s digital economy forward.
