Court Issues Fresh Directive To DSS Over Detained Ex-CBN Boss Emefiele

The suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has secured a court order that allows him to have unrestricted access to his lawyers and family members.

Emefiele, who was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) on June 9, 2023, following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu, is facing an investigation over his office and planned reforms in the financial sector.

According to Newsflash Nigeria, Justice Hamza Muazu of the FCT High Court, Maitama Division, granted the order on Friday, June 16, 2023, after hearing an application filed by J.B. Daudu SAN, counsel to Emefiele.

Daudu told the court that he had written letters to the DSS on June 14, 2023, requesting to see his client for further instruction, but the DSS did not respond.

The counsel to the second and third respondents, I. Awo, representing the DSS and the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), respectively, did not oppose the application.

Awo said that the DSS did not have the habit of denying such requests and that it would comply with the court order. He also asked for an extension of time to file their responses to the originating motion, which was granted by the court.

The case was adjourned till Tuesday, June 19, 2023, for hearing of the substantive suit.

Emefiele was appointed as the CBN governor in 2014 by former President Goodluck Jonathan and had his tenure renewed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019. He was the second-longest-serving governor of the apex bank and oversaw Nigeria’s biggest economic downturn. He was also known for his interventionist currency policy and multiple exchange rate regime.

Emefiele is a native of Agbor, Delta State. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Finance from the University of Nigeria Nsukka. He is also an alumnus of Stanford University, Harvard University and Wharton School of Business.

He was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Business Administration by the University of Nigeria Nsukka. Before joining the CBN, he had over eighteen years of banking experience and served as the chief executive officer and group managing director of Zenith Bank Plc.
