2023: Amaechi opens up on Buhari, Tinubu agreement

The former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has opened up about the agreement between President Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2023 election.

Amaechi, the current Minister of Transportation, said he does not aware of any agreement between Buhari and the former Lagos State governor.

Newsflash Nigeria had earlier reported that Senator Rufai Hanga, a key founding member of the APC, had implied that there was an arrangement between Tinubu and Buhari in the 2023 presidential election.

But when asked by Daily Trust if such pact existed between Buhari and Tinubu to hand over power to the latter, Amaechi said he does not know.

He stated that as the Director-General of APC Campaign Organisation during the 2015 and 2019 presidential elections, he did not witness such a decision.

Amaechi said: “Beyond being the director-general of the campaign organisation, I was the chairman of the Governors Forum.

“Most of the decisions on who would emerge as party chairman in 2014 were done by the forum, so I should know those ones.

“But if there was a private meeting between President Buhari and our leader, Tinubu, I wouldn’t know.

“If it was a public APC meeting and I was not there, then something must be wrong. I was not told that there was an agreement that power should be handed over to Tinubu.”

Recall Amaechi, who was part of the new Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) that joined forces to enhance APC.

Amaechi was the governor of Rivers State and also chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) when the merger was formed.

The Transport Minister was also one of the major financiers of the APC’s campaign that brought Buhari into power.

Amaechi was accused by citizens of Rivers that he allegedly used the resources of the state to fund Buhari’s 2015 presidential campaign.
