Pensioners’ Plight: NUP Exposes Shocking Monthly Payouts Amid Nigeria’s Economic Challenges

In a startling revelation, the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) has sounded the alarm about members receiving meager monthly payouts as low as N450 from their retirement savings accounts. Godwin Abumisi, the National President of NUP, disclosed this disheartening news during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday.

Expressing deep concern, Abumisi highlighted the severe hardship faced by pensioners in Nigeria, emphasizing the apparent lack of government consideration for the struggles of the poor masses.

“In Nigeria, the government does not think about the poor people. Otherwise, how can pensioners in Enugu receive as low as N450 as a monthly pension? And we have been saying this, but it seems as if we are crying wolf, but it is a reality,” he lamented.

Abumisi shed light on the widespread issue of retirees across the country receiving inadequate pension payments, ranging from N450 to N1,000. This predicament is particularly prevalent in the Southeastern states of Nigeria.

Providing specific examples, Abumisi detailed monthly pension amounts received by retirees in various states, including Borno with N4,000, Gombe with N8,000, Jigawa with N12,000, Katsina with N7,000, Kogi with N5,000, Kwara with N3,000, Niger with N4,000, and Taraba with N5,000, among others.

This revelation comes at a time when headline and food inflation in Nigeria stood at 28.92% and 32.84%, respectively, in December, as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics. The NUP’s disclosure sheds light on the urgent need for reform and increased support for the pensioners grappling with the economic challenges in Nigeria.
