Chef Dammy’s Cookathon Sparks Outrage Over N1,000 Charges

Chef Damilola Adeparusi, also known as Chef Dammy, is a Nigerian chef who is attempting to set a Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual with a 120-hour cook-a-thon. She started cooking on June 9, 2023, at FUOYE-JUPEB road, Oye Ekiti, and aims to cook non-stop until June 13, 2023.

However, her cookathon has been met with criticism and controversy after a Twitter user alleged that she was charged N1,000 to be in the Very Important Person (VIP) session, which according to the organisers, gave her access to eat all the food prepared by the chef for one day.

The Twitter user, #D_DebbieAgboola, posted on Saturday that she and her friend paid N1,000 each to be VIPs at the cookathon venue. She claimed that they were told that regular guests were not allowed to eat the food or take pictures and videos of the chef. She also claimed that they were told that the VIP fee only covered one day and that they would have to pay again if they wanted to come back.

Her tweet partly read:

“We were actually two who went together. We got there and we were told there’s VIP and regular.

“Regulars are those downstairs and won’t eat out of the food while VIPs are the ones upstairs and have access to take pictures and videos of the chef and still eat food.

“They further added that VIP costs #1,000. We asked if the 1k covers the 120hrs or just 24hrs and they told us it covers just today, that we’re going to eat all the food she will prepare.”

Her tweet sparked outrage and backlash from other Twitter users who slammed the chef and the organisers for exploiting and deceiving people. Some also questioned the authenticity and credibility of the cookathon and its record attempt.

Some of the reactions are:

#sisiceely: “Eiii god o, Make church Dey find clout. Tis’ the end of days.”

#sky_jfk: “Olorun I weak, e be like say dem dey carry us for a cruise, Everyone involved should be arrested. I’m not hating oo but that is not it.”

#Teejay: “This is fraud! How can you charge people to eat food that you are cooking for a world record? And why do you need VIPs for a cookathon? This is nonsense!”

#Oluwaseun: “This is why I don’t trust these Guinness World Record things in Nigeria. They are always shady and dubious. How can you verify that she is really cooking for 120 hours without any break or help? And who is sponsoring this nonsense?”

#Blessing: “This is unfair and wicked. How can you use people’s money to fund your record attempt? And how can you deprive people of food in this hard time? You should be ashamed of yourself!”

Chef Dammy has not yet responded to the allegations or the criticisms. She is still cooking as of Sunday evening and has reached over 40 hours of her cookathon.

Chef Dammy is a student of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) and a poet, songwriter, and editor. She is representing a church, Spirit Word Global Mission, in the cook-a-thon.

She hopes to break the record set by Hilda Baci, who cooked for 100 hours in Lekki, Lagos State in May 2023. Hilda Baci’s record is yet to be confirmed by Guinness World Records. The current official record holder is Lata Tondon, an Indian chef who cooked for 87 hours and 45 minutes in September 2019.
