Lekki Shooting: Lagos judicial panel plays CCTV footage

The judicial panel established by the Lagos government to probe cases of police brutality is now playing closed-circuit TV footage from the October 20 Lekki shooting.

The panel is saddled with the responsibility of investigating cases of brutality and human rights violations committed by operatives of the disbanded special anti-robbery squad (SARS), amongst other cases of abuses.

The panel obtained footage of the incident from the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) at its sitting in Lekki on Friday.

Doris Okuwobi, the chairperson of the panel, granted approval for the footage to be played.

Footages played with a datestamp of 10-20-2020 showed the protest ground as calm and well illuminated.

Protesters were seen moving in peaceful manners and cars were parked at various directions.

The part of the shooting is yet to be reviewed at the time of this report.

In an earlier appearance before the panel, Abayomi Omomuwansa, managing director of LCC, said the cameras stopped working from 8pm on the night of the shooting at the Lekki tollgate.

“I can confirm that inside here is the video footage that our surveillance camera was able to record for the 20th of October,” he said.

Men dressed in military uniform shot at #EndSARS protesters gathered at the Lekki tollgate.

Before the incident, youth around the country protested for 12 days, calling for the disbandment of the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) of the police and general police reform.
