PHOTOS: Guineans jubilate after the military overthrew President Conde

Thousands of Guineans on Monday have trooped out into the streets of the nation’s capital, Conakry to celebrate with the country’s soldiers after they have overthrown the long term President Alpha Conde.

Newsflash Nigeria had reported on Sunday that the Guinea soldiers have taken control of the government and suspended the Constitution over President Conde had failed to deliver on his promises to people.

The coup plotters, led by the former head of the Special Forces, Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya, had announced on state television on Sunday that Conde had been arrested while the government and constitution were dissolved.

Mr Doumbouya lamented widespread corruption and poverty as key reasons for the takeover, saying Conde had failed to deliver on his promises to Guinea people.

They also announced plans to replace Guinea’s governors with regional military commanders.

The country’s borders were closed and its constitution was declared invalid in the announcement read by Doumbouya who said:

“We have decided after having taken the president, who is currently with us, to dissolve the current constitution, to dissolve the institutions; we have also decided to dissolve the government and the closure of land and air borders.

“The personalization of political life is over. We will no longer entrust politics to one man, we will entrust it to the people.

A video had emerged showing the 83-year-old Conde, looking tired and dishevelled, in military custody.

Conde, in power for more than a decade, had seen his popularity plummet since he sought a third term last year, saying term limits did not apply to him.

Following the ousting of Condé who pushed through a constitutional referendum in Guinea on March 22, 2020, that would give him a third term after more than 10 years in office, Guineans trooped into the streets to celebrate with the soldiers.
