Fresh Strike Looms As FG, Workers Disagree On New Minimum Wage

The Nigerian organised labour and organised private and other workers sector reportedly recommends N30,000 as minimum wage per month but Federal Government disagrees. Their stance will shock you.

Comrade Ayuba Wabba, the president of the Nigerian Labour Congress, says the federal government will soon announce the new minimum wage as they kick against the already announced amount.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, says the federal government will address the agitation for an increase in the minimum wage to avoid more protest.

There happen to be a rift between the Federal Government and the workers union as the negotiation for a new minimum wage has been stalled. According to Vanguard, the federal government had earlier presented a miserly amount per month as a new minimum wage to the other social partners when the tripartite committee resumed sitting on Thursday, October 4.

But displeased by the federal government’s figure amidst the high cost of living in the country, the organized labour, the public, and private workers and OPS reportedly reached an accord, increasing their earlier figure to N40,000.

What the Federal Government Finally Announced?

To the greatest surprise of the people, the federal after the meeting announced N25000 against the NLC’s N40000. This has angered the workers and indeed all Nigerians that is why the delegates staged a walkout.

What NLC Chairman Said?

In the interim, Ayuba Wabba, Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) president, on Monday, October 8, said the federal government will soon announce the new minimum wage as the tripartite committee completes its assignment for onward submission to President Muhammadu Buhari. According to the chairman, they cannot accept that.

According to Comrade Wabba, the committee reconvened and deliberated on a new minimum wage figure that was acceptable to all employers of labour in the country.

Wabba said the presidency would make it public after deliberation by the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting today.

In a related report, the federal government says it will soon address the agitation for the upward review of the national minimum wage in a manner that will make workers and all Nigerians happy. The disclosure was made by the secretary to the government of the federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, on Sunday, October 7, at the 22nd choir anniversary of the Christ Apostolic Church, Living Water DCC Headquarters, Abuja, Punch reports.
