Bayelsa: Keyamo speaks on Supreme Court verdict

The Minister of State for Labour and Productivity and the All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftain, Festus Keyamo, SAN, has blamed his party leadership over the Thursday’s Supreme Court verdict of the Bayelsa governorship election.

He commended the Supreme Court judgment said “the Court has been firm and resolute, so far regarding pre-election cases and Election Petitions. I commend their lordships”.

Recall that, the Supreme Court on Thursday, February 13, had sacked the Bayelsa Governor-elect David Lyon and his Deputy, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieoyo over Degi-Eremieoyo forged certificate and ordered for the withdrawal of his Certificate of Return and issuance of same to Douye who came second in November polls.

The apex court in a unanimous decision by a five-man panel of Justices led by Justice Mary Odili held that Degi-Eremieoyo presented forged certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The apex court upheld the November 12, 2019, judgement of a Federal High Court in Abuja, disqualifying Degi-Eremieoyo from participating in the governorship poll.

The apex court, in a unanimous judgment, declared Sen. Douye Diri of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the winner of the November 16, 2019 governorship election after it ruled that he scored the second-highest number of votes and had the required spread.

In agreement, INEC Chairman, Yakubu Mahmoud on Friday then declared PDP candidate, Douye Diri winner and issued him certificate of return.

In a Keyamo reaction, he commended the Supreme Court on its judgements.

Mr Keyamo, A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, called his party to sit back and solve its internal issues.

According to Keyamo on his Twitter handle, he tweets:

“The Supreme Court has been firm and resolute so far regarding pre-election cases and Election Petitions. I commend their lordships.

“As a party, we have to look at our own internal party mechanisms that make us give our victories needlessly away to the opposition and take appropriate actions.”
