Ekiti College Students Protest Over Power Outage, Exams Postponed

Students of the College of Education, Ikere Ekiti, on Monday protested poor electricity supply in the campus and poor water supply, saying the situation was antithetical to their purpose in the institution.

The angry students blocked the gates of the school from about 6 am on Monday and mounted roadblocks to prevent anyone from entering the school. They demanded for the attention of the Provost. They laid siege at the gates for hours expecting the Provost.

Thereafter, the protesting students blocked the road leading to Igbara Odo, to express their grievances.

Among inscriptions on the placards of the protesting students are “No electricity in Ikere College”, “We need electricity in our campus”, “Power supply is crucial to our studies”.

College Students’ Union President and the Public Relations Officer, said the protest was to drive home the students’ demand for provision of electricity and other facilities to enhance their studies.

The president said, “Our education depends on electricity and we are being deprived of electricity supply.

“The darkness that they have thrown the campus to has compelled many of us to go to ATM stands and bank premises to read at night. We need not be told this is not safe and secure. Besides, when we go out to read where we can have access to electricity, many of our students had their rooms burgled and they lost valuables stuffs; such as laptop computers and phones in the process.

“We are suffering. We want the State Government to come to our aid urgently on this issue of electricity. We cannot continue like this, the students’ union leader said.

Meanwhile, a protest by students has forced management to postpone the first semester examinations which were originally scheduled to begin on Monday, June 24.

The college has directed all the students of the institution to proceed on break with immediate effect.

The statement from the Office of the Registrar order the students to vacate all the residence without further delay.

The statement added that the date of the resumption would be communicated in due course
