Tinubu Meets World Leaders as African Union Becomes G-20 Member

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria was among the world leaders who attended the G-20 Summit in New Delhi, India, on Saturday.

He met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen, and other dignitaries at the event.

The summit also witnessed a historic moment as the African Union (AU) became a permanent member of the G-20 group, which consists of the world’s richest and most powerful countries.

The AU, a continental body of 55 member states, joined the European Union as the only regional blocs with full membership. Previously, the AU was only an “invited international organization.”

The move was proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June and announced at the summit. Modi welcomed the AU, represented by Chairperson Azali Assoumani, to sit at the table of G-20 leaders as a permanent member. He said this would strengthen the G-20 and also the voice of the Global South.

Modi shared his excitement on his official social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. He wrote: “Honoured to welcome the African Union as a permanent member of the G20 Family. This will strengthen the G20 and also strengthen the voice of the Global South.”

The summit also discussed other issues such as more loans to developing nations by multilateral institutions, reform of international debt architecture, regulations on cryptocurrency, and the impact of geopolitics on food and energy security.
