2019 Election: Kwankwaso Boycotts APC Convention, Visits Atiku

Rabiu Kwankwoso, a serving senator and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, on Saturday night visited former Vice President Atiku Abubakar at his residence in Abuja.

What the duo actually discussed could not be immediately ascertained, but the visit was confirmed by the former vice president’s spokesperson, Paul Ibe.

A source confirmed that Mr Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, arrived at about 8:30 p.m. at Mr Abubakar’s home in Asokoro district of Abuja.

Those close to the senator told newsmen that he only went to pay a homage to Mr Abubakar because the top politician was not in the country during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations last weekend.

Mr Abubakar, a chieftain of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, is eyeing his party’s presidential ticket for 2019.

Mr Abubakar decamped from the APC in August 2017, alleging marginalisation and maladministration against the ruling party.

Mr Kwankwaso has not yet decamped from the APC, but he is amongst the current top politicians who are finding it increasingly difficult to remain in the party.

Mr Kwankwaso has been locked in a fierce political confrontation with the current Kano governor, Umar Ganduje. Over the past two years, several attacks and reprisal attacks between the supporters of the two politicians have been reported.

The APC held its national convention today, with a serious fallout expected as party bigwigs outwit themselves in a bid to control their strongholds. Mr Kwankwaso is amongst those feared to have lost out heavily in today’s event.

Whether tonight’s meeting between Messrs Kwankwaso and Abubakar had to do with a political future of the senator would be clearer later, sources said.

“They only touched on the future of Nigeria as a nation, but not necessarily their individual futures,” a source said.

Mr Ibe said there was no need to speculate beyond the affirmation that the two met for 45 minutes.
